the 1971-72 bazooka singles just ended.
Bobby orr got $1825 USD,
the other ones went well too.
that was the first bazooka bobby orr ever listed on ebay.check out the link.
what do you guys think about the prices ending, strong or week.
i personally think the orr was had at a good deal based on its scarcity.

in 1971-72 o-pee-chee issued gum boxes called bazooka,in each box of bazooka was 30 packs of bazooka bubble gum.

on the bottom of the box there were 3 mini hockey cards using the same photos as the 1971-72 o-pee-chee hockey cards but the bazooka cards are smaller and numbered out of 36.

the front of the bazooka box does note "extra 3 cards" and hockey across the middle area.

these cards are tough to find because most gum buyers threw the boxes in the garbage.

a lot of hockey card collectors did not even notice these boxes back in the day.they are very scarce to find these days.

sometimes you will see cut singles, full 3 card panels and a whole box.

i have a single of orr and a full box.

see page 192 in the vintage hockey collector for more info.

here is the bottom of a box, sorry about the scribble as i dont want people to copy the photo.
also a photo of the front of the box mixed in with my box collection.
you can see how tiny the bazooka box really is.

Great piece Dan. I can't tell from the scan but does it have tape on it like all the other ones I've seen? I owned a bazooka Orr for about 10 minutes.

Bazooka

January 21 2009, 11:46 PM

Tonight I am on Cloud Nine!! I won the Villemure Bazooka card. $291.00 with shipping, but I feel like it was worth it. It's hard to put a price on these, but using Bobby's numbers I figured the card should go for $300-400. Anyone know the buyer who won most of the others?

So, when are those 1925-1928 Anonymous cards coming up on eBay?????????? I can always dream......

yep, mine does have tape residue on the Orr.

forgot to mention that the side cards got taped by hand from the factory to seal the box on both sides.

thats why a lot of the singles in the closed auctions had tape residue.

so the middle cards are a lot easier to find without any tape but then again nothing is easy about this set.

also way to go david on that pick up.
after seeing those prices end i wonder how much a complete box with 3 cards is worth now?

Where do you Orr collectors rank the Bazooka Orr compared to his Topps Test card?
Is it more valuable in the same grade if offered?
Is it rarer than the Test issue? (Not sure of the print run of Bazookas unless someone knows for sure).
Would the 2 cards mentioned be the most expensive and sought after Orr cards or is there another one that can compete with these two?

Rarity

January 24 2009, 8:52 PM

Its hard to classify these two cards (Test & Bazooka) in the same catagory because the Test was released in a pack specially for the purpose of collecting whereas the Bazooka was a premium (if kept) when you bought a family pack of gum and was a part of the packaging, so its a premium card, hand cut, had tape on either end of the box and was prone to damage being just put on a shelf...

Two very different cards, the Bazooka is far rarer but for desire the Test is the choice of collectors first before the Bazooka but I would get the Bazooka first as it might take you 10 years to find one if looking.

I was surprised the Bazooka Orr didn't go for more, considering its rarity and the reverence hard core Orr fans give this card. It was the first Orr Bazooka on eBay in years, if ever. I would bet that for all of us who are not linked up with big dealmakers, it might have been the only opportunity we ever have for open access to that card.

For me, I'll stick with the regular issue 71-72 OPC. No dotted lines and the numbers on the back. Anyone got a PSA 8 for me?

damir those are good questions you have there.

i have been collecting bobby orr stuff for a long time tracking everything at shows since the early 90's and on ebay since 2001 in auctions and stores.

for your first question i would rank the orr bazooka as the #2 must have bobby orr collectable. #1 would be the 1967-68 general mills hockey contest card with orr as a boy in the photo. #3 the 1967-68 general mills mini card and #4 the topps 1966-67 "test card.

for your second question,is it more valuable? no only because collectors dont have the respect for the bazooka or general mills cards. but i do because i know how often these cards come up.here is a little history to compare the 4 cards -- the test bobby orr rookie,i have seen that card about 25+ times on ebay or at shows.the bazooka bobby orr card only 1 appereance ever on ebay and at shows about 4 in my time. the general mills mini card came up only twice on ebay and just a few times at the shows. the general mills contest card of bobby orr is the scarcest,i have the english version and it is the only one known and a person out in BC has the french version (pictured in bobbys book in the VHC).so realisticly the bazooka and general mills should be more but depending on how a collector regards and looks at those cards.

third ?,yes it is much rarer than the topps test card by a long shot.

fourth question, that question is up to the serious bobby orr collector but let me tell you if i did not have a bazooka orr in my collection i would have bid a lot higher than the $1825 it went for because on how tough i know it is.i recently won the general mills entry card from CAPSports, even though i picked it up for less than a $1000 i actually had a maximum bid of close to 4 gees.

i agree with natheneal about the card going fairly low but i know a lot of orr collectors that just dont respect the bazooka, test or general mills cards like i do.

most of them do not even have any of the four cards at all.

it could be another 10 years before we see one of the above cards again, also the test rookie card has been selling at very high prices lately (much more than previous years)

Thank you,all the boxes are empty display boxes except the factory set boxes.
boy do i ever dream they were all full, i can't even imagine that there would be a full 1967-68 topps box full of packs with minty cards !!!

Dan, I was going through the PSA pop report for fun and noticed that the only graded Orr 71 Bazooka is graded a PSA7. Do you know who has it and what is your opinion about what a piece like that could bring at auction since it's a pretty high grade for a card like that.

Wow,Damir i did not know one was even graded and a psa 7 to boot.
i have no idea who owns that one and this one is new news to me.
well the one that just sold was a psa 1 or 2 at best if graded and sold for $1825,
so a psa 7 i am guessing about $10.000+ maybe even more if the owner puts the psa 7 bazooka on a popular auction like Mastro.
