The autograph looks like it was done in ballpoint pen. Morenz died in 1937 and from what I have been told, ballpoint pens were not invented until the early 1940s and perfected in the 1950s. Is the autograph in ballpoint?
Thanks Jim, looking at it again, it may not be ballpoint. It is tough to tell about the authenticity based on the picture since parts of it are on a dark background. Was it just signed "Morenz"? I never saw one just signed with his last name. He sometimes signed "H. Morenz" or "H.W. Morenz", but I have never seen just his last name. He did have some subtle changes to his signature as his career went on, but it is tough to tell with this auto, at least on the computer, if it is good or not.
Thanks Sean. I have never seen a signature like this either. I have tried to compare it to some different autographs from Classic auctions. It looks right but it is strange that it's just the last name. Who knows, the person that acquired the signature may have caught him boarding a train or something. You can tell when looking at it closely that it was done quickly. I guess I'll fork out the $80 or so to send it to psa/dna. The fee is only $20 for Morenz but the shipping is a killer. Jim.
Personnally, I would be a bit suspicious that it was only signed Morenz, but there could have been a reason for that. Best of luck, I know the shipping is ridiculous. Morenz is a great autograph to have and I hope it works out. Let us know what they determine.
