Thanks for the info, I have 3 Yzermans, none of which looks like yours. I have a feeling that they started making these in 84-85 as I have players like Sittler, Park & Foster all of who didn't play for the team in 85-86. Any interest in selling that Yzerman?
I would not rely on those Beckett checklists as being accurate. I believe the sets for 90/91 and 91/92 are complete at 29 cards each. If you're interested in checklists or scans let me know. I have the complete set of one of those years on two uncut sheets. I also believe sets were issued in 92/93, 95/96 and maybe 99/00.
The Charlton Standard Catalog of Hockey Cards (11th ed) lists sets beginning in 84/85. The photos for some players were used in more than one year but there does appear to be a way to distinguish some of them:
84/85 is described as printed on thin stock with no mention of the photographer's name on the front of the card.
85/86 was printed on heavier stock and with the photographer's name on the right side of the photo. Seven cards are noted as using the same photo as the previous year. The Guide checklists 26 cards. I'm missing Duguay and Snepts to compete this set.
86/87 was printed on the same heavier stock as 85/86 but the photographer's name is on the left side of the photo. 29 cards are checklisted. Nine cards, including Yzerman, are noted as using the same photo as the previous year. 29 cards are checklisted.
Checklists for 87/88 (25 cards) and 88/89 (28 cards) sets are listed and described as similar to the previous sets with several photos re-issued.
The style of the cards changed to a horizontal format for 89/90. I have an Yzerman with stats printed on the back through the 88/89 season.
The Guide describes the 90/91 set with the front of the card "like the 89/90 series but have blank backs instead." I believe at least a few (including Yzerman) used photos from the previous year.
Beliveau55, yes I'm fairly certain that Yzerman is from 85/86 (it's the same one I have in my 85/86 "set"). The Demers and Oates could be from 86/87 or 87/88. The other Yzerman is from 87/88 or 88/89; I'm not positive.
I provided the folks at Beckett with a fair amount of information about various team issue sets several years ago but they could not have cared less. If it's not a short-printed, numbered rookie card from a major manufacturer they're not that interested. These days, I couldn't care less what the folks at Beckett think about issues like this. Many of their checklists are inaccurate and/or incomplete.
I believe your card was issued in 1985-86 (based on my rough notes when I viewed these sets in the past).
The mid-1980s Little Caesars are listed in the 2012 Vintage Collector's Almanac & Price Guide from theWantList.ca. Of note (listed in the Almanac, but not the Beckett) -
1984-85 - set of 24
1985-86 - set of 26 - photographer's name is to the right of the photo
1986-87 - set of 29 - photographer's name is to the left of the photo
I would love to find high resolution photos of all these sets. Does any one have full sets (ie - were the same pictures sometimes used in back-to-back years?)
Thanks so much, I do have an almost complete set of 1985-86, missing one card, but I'm not too sure who I am missing. Can you post who are in the 1984-85 and 1985-86 sets. I'm going to scan all of my cards when I have a chance, if you shoot me your email I can send them to you.
