The watching and waiting is so hard for those of us who prefer to jump in and do. I have spent way more than my share of time sitting in the hospital with a loved one.
Mom had a brain tumor removed 2 years ago. She spent just over 2 weeks in the hospital - all but 2 days in ICU due to a drain in the skull - worries about infection if she were moved to a regular floor. I don't know that she got better care because I was there watching and asking questions about EVERYthing the nurses and doctors did, but it didn't hurt.
In fact, I asked so many questions about what was happening, using the correct medical lingo(I'm not computer savvy for nothing! Research via the internet was my best friend)that I was asked more than once if I was a nurse. I always wondered if I should have been insulted by the fact that they never asked if I was a doctor. My usual response was no, but I play one on tv. Gotta laugh or you cry.
I think hospital care has gone the way of customer service - from bad to worse. I'm glad your mom got moved to a floor that is better run and cared for.
I'm sending warm thoughts your way - and your mom's as well.
By the way, Mom came through the surgery just fine, went home instead of to 6 months rehab like we expected, and has fully recovered. I hope you have many more years with your mom, as well.
