I've always been really impressed with Bruce Lee. His fighting skill, his motivation and his physique. I'm disabled from the waist down and would like to know if it's possible for me to train at all with JKD. I know that I won't be able to kick or throw (very easily at least) but my upper body is full functioning and is pretty strong. I'd also like some information on getting into really good shape if anyone has any tips I'd really appreciate it.
First of all, I commend you for wanting to learn JKD. Just because you don't have use of your legs doesn't mean you can't train. Training on the punches and trapping techniques is what you should focus on. Although most of the punches start at the hip, you can still get some snap into the punch if you train properly and work on timing and waist and shoulder action. Trapping is excellent for coordination, reaction, and speed, and that can be done regardless of your disability. I think a good overall plan for you would be to work mainly on your straight lead punch, backfist, hooks, and straight blast. And then to work on trapping drills with a partner, focusing mainly on pak sao and lop sao. If you're unsure about these techniques, I recommend getting "Bruce Lee's Fighting Method" Volume 1 to 4 as well as "Chinatown Jeet Kune Do" by Bob Bremer. There are a lot more techniques than these of course, but these will get you off to a great start. I remember a number of years ago, I met a wheelchair martial artist and I was blown away by what he could do. He actually used his wheelchair as a weapon to get more power! He would turn the wheel with his non-punching hand in the opposite direction of his hook punch. The result was a much more powerful punch. He then went into a backfist and then I think he did some kind of headlock move with an uppercut. Remember, the only limits are in your mind. Best of luck to you in your training.
