In today's independent.co.uk, SW19 Diary by Nick Harris reports that Radio Wimbledon is campaigning to have Henman Hill officially designated as such. A spokesman for Wimbledon Tennis Club said "That area of the grounds already has a name. It's called Aorangi Terrace and it will remain so." The terrace was given its name because it was constructed on the site of the old New Zealand sports and social club. Aorangi is the Maori name for Mount Cook, the highest mountain in NZ. It can also be spelt Aoraki, it means "cloud in the sky".
The forum had a contributor from NZ last year with log-on name Aotearoa and I learnt that meant 'Land of the long white cloud'. I was always wondering why, having just read about GP-P's trip to see the Morning Glory, a long white cloud in N.Queensland, Australia. Now I read in Richard Hamblyn's book Extraordinary Clouds that the NZ name was suggested by lenticular clouds such as those he pictures above Mount Ruapehu, North Island, on pages 58 and 109. |
