Taking Up the B&W

AJ, A while ago you suggested a B&W thread. Since then I have made conscious effort exploring the B&W . B&W reaches into our personal realms of emotions conscious and subconscious. Yes, I've been ..." messed with" by my own B&W works. Maybe that is why I haven't got into B&W all these years; not scarey or frightful, but just made uncomfortable enough , to not look at the work for very long...unsettling..? Anyway, for a photograph to do that, is kinda cool imho. The one cirrus shot in B&W , of yours, does that as several others I've seen at your site have also . There is the Surrealist's idea that us humans share some primal state of being. It is common with us all. Some how these works in B&W seem to get to that, perhaps easier than color renditions of the same. I wonder, as Monkeys coming out of the trees, did very early humanoids see in color? Maybe monkey man saw in B&W..?

I have been enjoying shooting in B&W during this short time of taking it up. I think it may be a good idea to have a dedicated thread to showcase B&W works.

Hi Mike,

You're definitely right when you say B&W works on a different level. Sometimes I post colour, sometimes B&W, sometimes both together. It all depends on the scene, the image, my mood and what shirt I'm wearing;) The bottom line of course is whether it is a good photograph, regardless of whether it's been shot in colour or B&W.

As to a dedicated thread, why not? I'm game. However, B&W is not your average photographers first choice these days, particularly those photographing the sky. Just don't expect too many contributions, a handful at most!

Best,

Alec
