Response to Commonly known that R&D is a bit crazy....

I don't think that would be possible.

The X1/9 was never an 'inexpensive' car when it was new. In 1982, it sold for nearly $14K Canadian, when the US/Can $ was almost equal!!

Today, you can buy a Toyota Echo Hatchback for $13K Canadian without air...

2007-8 is quite a ways off, and vehicle prices by then are gonna be a bit higher.

If the car sold for $28K Canadian at current car prices, that would be acceptable (in the sense that it can be properly engineered and built, the more you skimp on the bottom line, the less 'quality' you'll get in the end.

A 1978 X1/9 was $1000 more (Cnd) than a Fiat 128.. In 1978, that was A LOT of difference.... especially since a 128 sold for about $3995 or so!!

For example, what does a loaded 5spd Kia Rio RX-V sell for in the US? (called a Cinquo or something like that there). Here, with aluminum wheels, air, power windows/doors, roof rack, 5spd, keyless entry, heated mirrors $16.5K Canadian.. So that is about $13.5K USD. I don't think a X1/9 could be built for a mere $3500 more and be good...

The first X1/9 had everything, but it had the 128 engine...

Yes, it was affordable... especially compared to any other mid engined targa top sports car of the era.

17K Euros, ok..

I just found a 2004 Fiat Barchetta 1.8 16V for sale in Austria.. $19,900 Euro.. That is $26K USD for a used car.

$17K X1/9? I think it might be hard.
