so if all this stuff is true

March 7 2005 at 10:24 AM

the first X was fiats bastard child and lost money

and yet it was such a wildly popular car for fiat

that they are now recalling the X name on a concept

and they might build something new under the X name

but not necessarily something based on this concept car

and its hoped a "lively sports car" would "revive the brand"

so theyre looking to just slap a X like body on a punto

and roll out a front engine fwd X as cheap as they can

for a minimum investment and a maximum profit margin

but 99% of us think that is the stupidest idea imaginable

and maybe 1 out of 1000 of us would buy it front engine

then wouldnt it be worth fiats effort to make it mid engine?

and make it look more like the X somehow?

but still do it as cheap as they can?

what should they do??

Smart Roadster platform with big Fiat engine and very X like body?

or how could they best accomplish a real new X without losing money?

unsure about DaimlerChrysler

I think a Smart Roadster platform could be made to work nicely if the chassis is strong enough to handle one of Fiat's more/most powerful 4 cylinder engines, but I'm not sure DaimlerChrysler is going to be partnering up with Fiat. These corporate executives always say such conflicting things, Fiat brass at Geneva mentioned they are talking to DaimlerChrysler about some kind of deal but then at the very same time DaimlerChrysler is telling the press they are NOT looking for any new partnerships right now...

well, hold up, on second read...

... I looked at that again and it seems to be more oriented toward MERGERS. I glanced it over the first time and saw where they say they are not looking for "any new partners", but now that seems a little more like they are not referring to the kind of alliance they might carve out with Fiat? I don't know... -Mac

a company can buy technologies and platforms from other suppliers.

The Chevy SSR isn't even made by GM! Go figure, it was designed and made by ASC.

Fiat can source out any platform from anyone, no probs. Just getting the body in white over to the paint shop and fit and finish would be a headache.

it's not gonna get built.

Fiat has NO intention of making a new X this is a styling exercise done by a school, the fact it uses a punto chassis doesn't mean anything "look at the clio, and clio v6", since it's just a STYLING exercise, the styling and proportions are mid engine, it's literaly COVERED with grilles to let air in and out of the middle of the car, so HYPOTHETICALLY speaking it WOULD be mid engine, but it's not, it's NO engine, it's just a 1:1 scale model of a "what if?" it's only purpose is to be beautiful, and give publicity to the school and it's sponsors.

Trust me on this, I know what i'm talking about.

Yes, we are aware the X1/99 is just a school project

Thank you for trying to clarify that for us but we already know that that is all the X1/99 is. Please see my response to your other message further up the forum for a more detailed explanation of what we are really trying to do with this forum

Peace, -Mac
