The 'other' X1/9 wasn't a 308GT4....

March 21 2005 at 6:17 PM

Prototype

Production model

This was a gorgeous car, later became the Jalpa..

Many people think of the 308GT4 as the fast X1/9, but, I think it was really the Lamborghini Silhouette, absolutely gorgeous in every respect. I think it would only look better with a X1/9 style targa bar

Cheers

Maybe it is because I have always been more of a Lamborghini fan than a Ferrari fan, they're both great marques, but just my preference, I've never really cared much for the "Baby Ferrari" moniker slapped on our little X, I have always more enjoyed referring to it as a "Lamborghini Go-Kart"

If Fiat ever were to produce a successor, they need to keep at the front of their minds that it should be another Lamborghini Go-Kart.

Thats more of what I have in mind for a New X1/9

March 24 2005, 1:24 PM

Wedge, Mid-Engine, Targa and unique.
Soft, round, front engine wienermobile its not and should never be.
They should take the Old X, muscle it out like the Jalpa, update it, but still retain.....I have to say it, the "X Factor".
If they don't it's just any other car I would not own. A slab of metal without a soul. Like a Mitsubishi Eclipse. (Ha!)
Oh Yeah, real sports cars come in stick w/ clutch ONLY!!!!
Later all,

automatics and market studies

March 25 2005, 7:44 AM

If the X1/9 was sold with an automatic, you'd be surprised how many more would be sold in the US...

Mazda would have shot themselves in the foot if the RX7, Miata, or any of their other cars were only sold in manual versions.

Same with the new Corvette. The Pontiac GTO is a sports car, BUT manual is a $685 option!! Automatic is 'standard'!!! (hey, that thing has a 400hp LS2 engine!!).

I'd be ordering my X1/9 with a manual gearbox, however, if some beautiful woman wants to buy one and doesn't know how to shift gears manually, by all means, offer an automatic...

You'd be surprised just HOW many automatic sports cars are out there ( I know, terrible!!). Look at the Ferrari 400. Although it isn't a real sports car, it is a Ferrari! Ok, now, look how many are manual vs Automatic.... I can't seem to find a manual one if my life depended on it! I saw one for auction (1979 model, carbed) and it was manual, but every SINGLE one I see on Ebay is an automatic!! ahhhhh!! V-12 with auto?!?! A GM auto box as well!

Offering both on a X1/9 would be beneficial to car sales, and you'd be amazed by how many people would buy the auto version, but I bet none of us X fanatics will .

Cheers

Sadly I must agree

March 25 2005, 8:22 AM

I don't think very many of us would want anything but a manual (5 or 6 speed please) but if they also offered an automatic it would make the car appealing to a lot of people who might want one but either don't know how to drive a stick or who like having that free hand for a coffee cup while driving it to work. -Mac

cup holders? ;)

March 26 2005, 6:16 AM

Umm... hmmm, I never thought of that. Smart ForTwo went on sale in Canada, with NO cupholders... the public were outraged! (I think the latest Smart ForTwo has them).

I wonder if the Corvette has cupholders..?!?!?

Gotta do some benchmarking. I've never seen the latest (and last) MR2 or Celica up close. Even Toyota is pulling out of the sports car market in North America... again. The numbers aren't there, sad.

I'd order my X1/9 with cupholders delete, that is what a girlfriend is for .

(she can drive, I'll hold the cups...)

I don't think MR2 is going away for lack of interest...

March 26 2005, 12:29 PM

... in a small mid-engined sports car, no, the MR2 is going away because it is HOMELY. Sales have been poor because it is an unattractive looking design.

If the MR2 had been made to look more slick, more sexy, more badass, it would be doing much better imho.

Instead it looks basically like a box with the edges rounded off and giant disproportionate headlights. That's why sales are sucking. Everyone went and bought Miatas instead. They may not be mid-engined but at least they look somewhat like one would expect a sporty little convertible to look, the MR2 looks like a surprised bar of soap...

If there were no market interest in small sporty 2 seaters, Miatas would have died ages ago, but those are STILL selling like hotcakes...

Peace, -Mac

I Take back what I said about automatics.

March 26 2005, 2:35 PM

Wussoes drive em. But if is what it takes to get a new X on the road, I'm fine with that. It just better have an acual stick and an actual clutch pedal. No Autostick or anything like that.
Later all, James
