Response to NFS Releases Details for BWCWA Burn in Minnesota

Cold, wet weather forced forest officials on Monday to end controlled burning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for this season.

Weekend rain and forecasts for more has made it impossible to burn more than 5,000 acres on two sites near Magnetic and Kekekabic lakes. Those burns had already been postponed because of rain and wind last week, said Jean Bergerson of the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center in Grand Rapids.

The two lakes are about 20 miles from Eagle Mountain (the burns are addressing the July 4, 1999, blowdown).
