The market for llamas, as packing animals and sources of fur, has crashed, and some animals are being sold off for cheap meat or even abandoned in pockets of the West where they were raised. So Ms. Hakes has stepped in, railing against what she calls the "throwaway llama" culture and beginning a personal crusade to save them by taking in llamas that have been given up by their owners.
