Response to Hood Climbers Stranded in Whiteout

PORTLAND (KPTV) -- You could get a $175 ticket if your caught driving without chains while trying to get to Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood.
The chain requirement is for Timberline Rd., just off of Hwy. 26. All vehicles, including those with four-wheel drive, must use snow chains. Vehicles without chains will be turn turned away.
According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, the requirement is due to the high number of accidents in recent days due to high winds, heavy snow and slick ice. Another major cause for the requirement was a 30 car pile-up along the mountain road. No injuries were reported in accident.
