Response to Attempt to Cross Arctic Ocean via North Pole Solo and Unaided

April 10, 2002 South African adventurer Mike Horn abandoned his 17-month solo Arctic trek this week after suffering severe frostbite early into month number two.

Horn's extensive plan for his Arktos Expedition included traversing the North Pole as a prelude to circumnavigating the Arctic Circle. According to a press release on the Arktos Web site, some 125 miles into his nearly 19,000-mile odyssey, Horn removed his gloves to tie up a loose bootlace, freezing both his thumbs and an index finger.
