TACOMA -- Deep snow in the Cascades probably will prevent Chinook Pass from opening in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
The Transportation Department says snowplows made it to the pass yesterday, but it may not open for traffic until the second week of June because of avalanche danger.
The 54-hundred-foot pass on Highway 410 is one of the gateways to Mount Rainier.
The latest opening date in the past decade was June 14th. Last year it opened on May tenth.
Also still closed is nearby Cayuse Pass -- elevation 47-hundred feet, on Highway 123.
