Response to Fatality in 150 Foot Fall on Mount St. Helens Quartz Creek Trail

Elk hunters helped a lost hiker find his way out of the Mount St. Helens area Monday, five days after he started an around-the-mountain trek.
Brian Bauer, 59, of Middlebury, Vt., originally planned a three-day hike. But he became disoriented on the west side of the mountain, according to the Skamania County Sheriff's Office.
Bauer set out from the Windy Ridge parking lot last Wednesday morning with intentions of circling St. Helens on the Loo-wit Trail in counterclockwise fashion. He exhausted his water supply in the warm temperatures and rugged hiking conditions Wednesday and was dehydrated by nightfall.
He found water and set up camp. But Thursday, Bauer discovered the trail was difficult to follow and he strayed west from the mountain.
