Response to September 2002 Accidents/Rescues

RANDOLPH, N.H. - The body of a 71-year-old hiker was carried down from Mount Madison on Thursday afternoon.
Peter Busher of Chester Gap, Va., was carried almost four miles in winter weather to the trailhead in Randolph, Fish and Game Sgt. Douglas Gralenski said.
The weather on the mountain - 60-mph winds, snow, rain, 30-degree temperatures and visibility of less than 100 feet - kept recovery teams from getting the body off the mountain Wednesday.
Gralenski said the weather was a factor in the death, and that hypothermia was being considered the primary cause.
