DODSON -- Police are trying to determine how a 29-year-old man died after his body was found on a rocky hillside in the Columbia River Gorge.

Two hikers found the body of Jason R. Holt about 1:30 p.m. Sunday about 200 feet below the Horsetail Falls trail near the Columbia River Scenic Highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene from massive head injuries.

Capt. Brett Elliot, spokesman for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, said the two hikers saw yellow crime scene tape trailing off down a hill and then found Holt's body nearby. Elliot said the tape was probably left over from a previous accident or investigation.

Search and rescue volunteers and members of Explorer Post 631 used ropes and pulleys to extricate Holt's body from the steep hillside.
