December 3, 2002 A study of avid male mountain bikers suggests a link between the sport and infertility, though some researchers in the field say they're skeptical of the findings.

Dr. Ferdinand Frauscher, head of the department of uroradiology at University Hospital in Innsbruck, Austria, led a team of scientists that monitored a group of 40 serious mountain bikers—they all rode more than two hours a day, six days a week, and logged over 3,000 miles a year—and found that 90 percent of them had a lower sperm count and less-mobile sperm when compared to a control group of 35 non-cyclists. Eighty-eight percent of the mountain bikers also had abnormalities in the scrotum, compared with 26 percent in the control group. Participants in the study were aged 18 to 44 for the mountain bikers and 17 to 41 for the control group.
