Yes we all had to suit up, along w/checking cameras (in case one was dropped on traffic, I suppose), sign waivers, etc. I think there was even a metal detector. We got lockers for street duds, etc. The suits, basically overalls, were for protection from wind & weather, I suppose. We even had to clip bags w/raincoats in them to our harness though we didn't use them--it didn't rain for once. Whether the suits are required in Sydney's sometimes hot summers, I don't know; I climbed in August, their late winter. It was cool and breezy.
For more information, try www.bridgeclimb.com You're supposed to book months in advance, but I walked in and got on a group leaving (or beginning a lengthy prep) in 10 minutes. For the preparations we went through, you'd think it was the Space Shuttle; it's certainly worth doing once. Pricey, but not compared with the cost of getting there.
