THE bodies of five people were yesterday pulled from masses of snow in Italy and Austria after avalanches in the European Alps.
A sixth person later died in hospital after being rescued from under tonnes of snow.
It was the worst avalanche tragedy this winter in Italy.
Four Italian tourists died in the Brembana Valley in northern Italy, about 100km northeast of Milan, after a shelf of snow crashed down from a height of 2200m yesterday, alpine rescue officials said last night.
Three bodies were uncovered yesterday while a fourth victim was found alive but severely injured.
Meanwhile in Warth, Austria, the bodies of two German men aged 37 and 38 were recovered after another avalanche yesterday.
According to reports from the alpine police, a blanket of snow slipped from a height of 2450m and buried three mountain climbers.
