A 37-year-old Littleton man was killed Wednesday afternoon after he slipped off a rock ledge above Bear Creek along Colorado 74 between Morrison and Evergreen and tumbled more than 50 feet to the creek bed below. The man and a female friend were walking in the popular hiking area known locally as The Falls just before 3 p.m. when they stopped on the ledge to enjoy the view, the woman told investigators.
The man, wearing sneakers, tried to shinny up the rock face behind the narrow ledge. He slipped off the wet, icy rocks, banged against the ledge and tumbled over to the side, said Capt. Nettie Calvi, a paramedic with the Highlands Rescue Unit.
