BROWNVILLE (AP) -- Conditions were described as extreme with ice coating the ground along the Appalachian Trail north of Brownville where a hiker suffered a fatal fall Thursday.
Authorities identified the victim as 47-year-old Jeffery Peet of Hampden.
According to the Maine Warden Service, his daughter, Dustan Peet, believed to be about 24 years old, was able to summon aid but the father succumbed before help arrived.
Maine Warden Sgt. Roger Guay estimated that Peet slid 100 feet or more off the trail following the noontime accident.
