... of trail hiking in hilly, forested areas doesn't amount to one mile of off-trail hiking. Many national and state parks and forests do not encourage off-trail hiking because the "average trail hiker" knows nothing about off-trail hiking, i.e., bushwacking. GPS and cell phones do not equal knowledge, skills, and experience for outdoor recreational activities, although they may help someone get lost and hopefully found.
