DAVAO CITY (MindaNews) - The Protected Area Management Board of the Department of Environment has an important reminder to those who intend to conquer the peak of Mt. Apo this Holy Week: “Don’t.” Mt. Apo National Park , a protected area and ASEAN Heritage Site, is still off limits and all entry points leading to it are being monitored and guarded.
Leonilo Rivera, Southern Mindanao director of the PAMB and head of the secretariat of the Mt. Apo PAMB Executive Committee of Southern and Central Mindanao, told MindaNews that the resolution which closed designated areas of Mt. Apo Natural Park to all climbers and trekkers for two years from May 31, 2000, was extended “indefinitely” through Resolution 2002-10 on July 25, 2002 “and that resolution remains in force.”
The area was ordered closed in 2000 “to prevent further destruction of the area and depletion of its resources brought about by the influx of mountain climbers and trekkers.”
The period of closure has been extended indefinitely “until such time that the evaluation, assessment and validations of the activities by concerned stakeholders and PAMB members for the opening of the designated areas.”
The resolution also urged local government units and other agencies with control, jurisdiction and/or supervision over all entry points “to effectively implement the closure.”

-Colan to Garuk to Peak Trail and Sabwag to Peak Trail in Barangay Kapatagan, Digos and Barangay Sibulan in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur
