Citing homeland security, the Department of Defense is planning to fence off about 20 miles of a popular hiking and biking trail in the East Mountains near Tijeras.
Much of what is known as the Otero Canyon trail network would be off-limits to hikers and mountain bikers.
Technically, much of the trail system is already closed to public use, but that has not been enforced, officials say.
Construction of the fence, which is expected to cost millions of dollars, could start by the end of this year.
The trail, which starts and ends in the Cibola National Forest, runs through Department of Defense property.
Although the public will be allowed to comment on the fence proposition, Kirtland Air Force Base officials said there's little question in their minds that the fence will happen.
