His only setback in his quest to climb all 54 of Colorado's 14,000-foot-plus peaks in the winter was suffering second-degree frostbite on his right hand while trudging through snow on Capitol Peak near Aspen earlier that month.
Ralston, who moved from Ohio to suburban Denver in middle school, was profiled by the Aspen Times in February about his quest to solo climb the 14ers, as the mountains are called, between the winter solstice and spring equinox.
