A hiker found the 82-year-old crawling up a steep embankment one week ago on the Chimney Tops Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about six miles from the Sugarlands Visitors Center.
The resident of Princeton, W. Va., told park rangers he could not remember his name or where he lived.
"A physician determined he had a pacemaker," park spokeswoman Nancy Gray said Wednesday. "They knew they could get an identification off of it."
Using the serial number obtained through an X-ray, the medical staff traced the pacemaker to the date it had been implanted, and that led them to Bowles' personal information.
