Camp counselors on a holiday weekend excursion were swept over Rainbow Falls in Transylvania County, killing one and injuring the other, investigators said.
Helen E. Mannweiler, 19, of Walnut Creek was killed in the fall and her boyfriend, Bryan P. Budgin, 23, also of Walnut Creek, had a head injury, investigators for the National Park Service said Monday.
The couple were swimming Friday in the Horsepasture River above Rainbow Falls when they were swept over the 181-foot falls, said Terry Seyden, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service.
Mannweiler died at the scene of the accident. Budgin was airlifted to Mission St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville.
