The state has purchased nearly 80 acres from the Cheshire Rod and Gun Club for $260,000 that for the first time will allow hikers to get from the visitors' center in Lanesboro to the summit of Mount Greylock without having to walk along Rockwell Road
Peter C. Webber, acting director of the state Division of State Parks and Recreation, Department of Conservation and Recreation, said the acquisition was doubly important in that the entire "greenway" along the roads to the summit have been protected from development.
He called the land, located about a mile north of the visitors' center, "the last missing piece" that needed to be protected along the road system.
The land will be annexed to the 12,000-acre Mount Greylock Reservation, and a new trail will be built from the visitors' center to connect with other trails to the summit, according to Webber.
