PALISADES GLACIER HUT DESIGN COMPETITION UNDER WAY
If you've ever found yourself in a mountain hut muttering about the facility being too loud, too cramped or not well thought out, now is your chance to come up with a better concept. An international design competition is under way at the University of California, Berkeley School of Architecture for a 60 to 80-person hut located near the trailhead leading to the Palisades Glacier in California's Sierra mountains.
The goal of the competition is to generate fresh approaches and ideas for development of the Palisades Glacier Mountain Hut, especially in the presentation of safety, weather and educational information as part of the wilderness base camp experience. The winning design team will receive a cash award of $25,000, and it is expected that the winning team also will be involved in the eventual construction of the facility, which will be in the range of $1.5 million.
