Little Switzerland's downtown is for sale.
After 17 years, Jake and Brenda Ray Messer say it's time to let go.
Their Switzerland Cafe and store, and three adjoining commercial spaces, are on the market for $700,000.
Apart from a realty office and the post office across the road, the Messers own the heart of Little Switzerland.
The prospect of change unsettles folks in an unincorporated community.
"We're kind of small," said relief postmistress Jean Law, "and would kind of like to stay that way."
In 1909, Charlotte lawyer and judge Heriot Clarkson became enthralled by views of Grandfather Mountain to the northeast, Mount Mitchell to the southwest and the South Mountains on the southeastern horizon.
Clarkson and nine other investors bought 1,100 acres.
They named it for Switzerland's Jura range.
