One of Maine's best-known wildlife photographers has died at the age of 56.
Authorities say Bill Silliker Jr. of Saco collapsed Monday while leading a group of photographers taking moose pictures in Baxter State Park.
Silliker was on the Roaring Brook Trail when he grabbed his chest. A doctor and nurse in his group performed CPR, and emergency crews arriving at the scene tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.
Silliker, known as "the Mooseman," had taken pictures for the Baxter State Park Maine Moose Watcher calendars since 1997. His photos were featured in the park's visitors center. His work also
was published in national magazines, and he served as a columnist for several Maine newspapers.
