On my February SE highpoint marathon a decade or so ago, the Blue Ridge Parkway was closed on "my" day due to snow/ice, but a call to the Mt Mitchell park office found the secretary at work. She gave directions to the Carson Creek Road which was how she got to work in her Ranger 4x4, although she did question whether I would be willing to drive on a gravel road. (Smile!) It could have been difficult if the temps had been a few degrees colder at lower elevations and the wet spots had been ice, but my 2wd camper got me there, and the BRP was open for my return to "civilization". I think the BRP people go to great lengths to avoid scratches on their guard rails, closing the road frequently in winter.
