Table Mountain authorities lashed out this week at a new guide book for adventurous visitors to the mountain which, they say, could endanger novice hikers.
Representatives of the Cape Peninsula National Park and the Mountain Club of South Africa charge that Karen Watkins's Adventure Walks and Scrambles in the Cape Peninsula could damage Table Mountain's ecosystem and lead the public into perilous situations.
But Watkins and her publisher say the book - a guide to adventurous walks and climbs off the designated paths - is aimed at experienced mountain hikers.
Watkins said this week she had gone to great lengths to act responsibly. "I'm first and foremost an environmentalist and I would never do something to hurt the environment."
