The first Philippine eagle bred in captivity was released into the wild over the country’s highest mountain today.
Only about 500 of the endangered birds, also known as monkey-eating eagles, are believed to remain in the Philippines, where deforestation and poaching threaten their survival.
Bred and hatched by scientists and volunteers near the southern city of Davao, the 1 1/2-year-old eagle named Kabayan was freed from his cage on Mount Apo.
Kabayan, the first of his species to be bred in captivity and freed, has a tiny transmitter attached to his chest to monitor his movements, but it is estimated that he has only a 50-50 chance of survival in the wilderness.
