On May 16, 2004, at 10:55 am Nepal time, Mexican mountaineer Alejandro Ochoa, 27, reached the summit of Mount Everest as a member of the Mexican-Canadian Mt. Everest Expedition 2004. This climbing team, lead by Mexican mountain guide Andres Delgado, consisted of three Mexican and two Canadian climbers who ascended Everest without supplemental oxygen.

Later that day, Alejandro's sister, Lorena Ochoa, 22, a professional golfer on the LPGA tour, won her first LPGA tournament, the Franklin American Mortgage Championship in Franklin, Tennessee. She became the first Mexican golfer to win an LPGA tournament.
