Response to Third (and maybe 4th) Fatality on Liberty Ridge This Season

When authorities recovered the body of mountain climber Luke Casady on Mount Rainier last week, they also found his camera and two rolls of film.

Once developed, the pictures helped Mount Rainier National Park rangers confirm that Casady, 29, of Stevensville, and his climbing partner, 29-year-old Ansel Vizcaya of Missoula, were caught in a freak storm, according to Casady's widow, Callyn.

The search for Vizcaya, who rangers say they believe also died, was "closed down" Sunday, a spokeswoman for the national park said.

Patti Wold said rangers think Vizcaya's body is buried under snow in a steep area prone in warm weather to falling ice and rocks.

The search will continue by helicopter this week as weather permits.

In 20 minutes, rangers told Casady's family, the weather went from sunny, clear and hot, to white-out conditions with winds estimated as high as 100 mph.
