LONE PINE, Calif. (AP) - The 100th anniversary of the completion of the trail to the summit of Mount Whitney will be celebrated this weekend with a ribbon cutting for the new trailhead structure at Whitney Portal.
The Saturday morning event takes place exactly 100 years after completion of the trail to the Whitney summit. Among the guests will be George Marsh, grandson of Gustav Marsh, who led the volunteer trail effort.
The three-day centennial celebration begins Friday with events in Lone Pine, at the Lone Pine Campground and at the Whitney Portal.
