Two men have been arrested and accused of planning an attack against entrants in a major hiking event that has attracted more than 1,100 British soldiers.The 37-year-old Syrian and 33-year-old Libyan were arrested three days ahead of the annual Nijmegen Four Days Hike, which attracts thousands of hikers including soldiers from the US and Britain, prosecution spokeswoman Loes Borghuis said.One of the men – Borghuis wouldn’t say which – was arrested on suspicion of preparing a murder and the other for making threats.She said the Syrian was living in the Netherlands and the Libyan was living “without a fixed address.”Prosecutors said the men planned to carry out an attack against soldiers participating in the hiking event, but did not release any details.“The prosecutor’s office doesn’t rule out the possibility that the men were just trying to sow panic,” prosecutors said in a statement.Around 1,140 British soldiers and 130 Americans plan to walk in the Nijmegen Hike,” which has grown into a festival event that attracts 50,000 entrants and nearly a million visitors annually to the Dutch city of Nijmegen, 80 miles south-east of Amsterdam. The event begins tomorrow (Tuesday).
