Justin England won two duels yesterday to capture the Volkswagen Mount Washington Bicycle Hillclimb.
England, a resident of San Anselmo, Calif., had to withstand a tense battle with Hillclimb veteran Phillip Wong, all while battling driving wind, rain and fog. England surged past Wong in the final 500 meters and was first across the line in 58 minutes, 50 seconds.
Wong, from Gloucester, Mass., was clocked in 58:55. Andrew Knight crossed the finish line third in 1:01:05.

England’s and Wong’s times were well off the race record, 49:22 set in 2002 by Thomas Danielson in perfect weather conditions.
Aimee Vasse won the women’s race. An accomplished climber, Vasse finished in 1:10:44 to outdistance Franklin’s Kerry Litka (1:15:41). Vasse finished 19th overall. Litka placed 45th.
