Response to I-40 closures

The Cherokee National Forest has closed all its recreation areas until noon Monday and Clingmans Dome Road and other sections of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park remain closed.
The national park's general information number will provide updates at 865-436-1200, Ext. 2.
Crews working throughout the weekend expect by Monday to have one lane of traffic open in each direction on Interstate 40 just inside the North Carolina state line.

The rain-swollen Pigeon River made off with a 180-foot section of the interstate's eastbound shoulder and outside lane Friday morning.
Standing near the recently slimmed-down section of the interstate, Jamie Wilson, a North Carolina Department of Transportation division construction engineer, said it would take months to repair the damage and reopen all four lanes.
