Response to "Alternate" highpoint for IL

Zak,

Since we are in the process of repeatedly pummeling deceased equines, ...

I would respectfully disagree with you on this one.

The top of the Washington Monument is 555 feet (and change, but close enough). It sits on a small knoll of between 30 and 40 feet of elevation. Taking the most generous measurement, the top of the monument is 595 feet from mean sea level or 166 feet higher than Reno Reservoir.

However, the top of the Washington National Cathedral, while it is only 301 feet high, sits at an elevation of slightly greater than 377 feet (based at the BM at the corner of Wisconsin and Massachusetts Aves). Thus, the highest point is (being most conservative), is 671 feet or 242 higher than the HP.

>IL & DC are measurements to the observation deck.

I measured from the top. If you want to claim the highest point, you have to go to the highest point!
