Response to Konvention summit hike

This coming weekend will be our 2006 Konvention in Asheville NC. Here is the latest information sent to me from Patrick. I've taken the liberty to dress it up a bit. Great information Patrick.

Highpointers Club Group Hike

Mount Mitchell NC

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

7:00 am - The group summit hike will meet in hotel lobby and leave at 7am promptly as it is a long hike!!! The number of cars depends on participants.

8:30 am - We will have to drop off a cars and be hiking by 8:30 am. Expect to be hiking 6 hours and back to Black Mountain CG.

5:30 am - Arrival back at "Black Mountain" because of the banquet, this will be a strenuous hike and on a time schedule. There is water available in only about 3 spots on route and at summit restrooms.

The longer hike will depart from "Black Mountain Campground" and return via "Colbert Ridge" (12.8 miles).

For those wishing a shorter option (11.2 miles), I suggest and out, and back, from the campground.

The longer option is more difficult but more scenic. The final route will depend on weather and group, many options available.

There are many options to summit Mount Mitchell. The only shorter ones (other than driving to the top) are:

1 - Park at park office and hike the Old Mitchell trail along the ridge about 2 miles to the top.

2 - Also parking at park office, take the "Old Railroad Grade" (Commissary Trail) out toward the "Commissary Campsite." After about 2 miles take "Camp Alice Trail" to summit (3 miles one way) or continue out another mile and summit via "Mount Mitchell Trail" (about 4.5 miles one way). The "Camp Alice Trail" climbs about 800 feet in 1.1 miles. "The Mitchell Trail" from "Commissary Campsite" to summit gains about the same but in 1.6 miles.

I am not sure if the tower is open. It was open and flaking down concrete in the spring

Since I will be getting in late Friday if anybody has any questions leave a message, at the hotel (Super 8). I'm bunking with Will Mokszycki.

Hope everyone arrives at the "Big A" safely. Think cool and clear!

Be sure that you have signed your Group Hike Waiver before setting out.
