THE KENTUCKY HIGHPOINT CLIMB
Sunday, August 6, 2006
9:00 am Meet in Super 8 parking lot for directions and carpooling.
9: 15 am Depart for highpoint, approximately 140 miles with the majority of it four lane highway. The traffic on Black Mountain, six miles, should be light because it is Sunday.
11:00 am approx. Pit stop around Kingsport Tenn.
12:00 pm approx. Arrive at the crest of the hill about 50 yards before the "Welcome to Kentucky" sign and take a sharp left, arriving at yellow gate. From the gate, the highpoint is 1.7 miles away, taking the road headed south. Some people leave their car here and walk. The road is paved to the FAA Long Range Radar Facility where the pavement ends. Continue on the dirt road about 0.1 mile until you come to a fork in the dirt road. Turn left at the fork and follow the gravel road past a normally unlocked gate to the abandoned lookout tower and the highpoint.
1:00 pm Lunch in Appalachia.
1:45 pm Depart for Ashville.
4:00 to 5:00 pm Arrive at Super 8, Ashville.
Note: It is necessary to complete a waiver agreement with the Penn Virginia Coal Co., Inc. before attempting the Kentucky highpoint. Complete the form, available from the registration committee, Friday night and return it to the committee or myself by 10:00 am Saturday. I have a room at Super 8 so the form can be returned to me at the reception desk. All forms will be mailed Saturday morning.
Make reservation for an additional night's stay at Super 8 if desired.
