Response to Trip Report : Ishpatina Ridge
Those who follow Canadian HP's know that the Ontario HP has been in doubt. There are two humps on Ishpatina Ridge over a mile apart, and both appear to be equal in height. The south hump is largely bald, has a firetower on it, and has been assumed to be the HP. The north hump is covered with tall trees, which has complicated sightings from the south.
Last September my sons Tom, Dan and I canoed to the south end of Smoothwater Lake, took the canoe and beat up a small creek to the west of Ishpatina Ridge (I don't recommend it!). From there we were able to bushwack to the summit of the north hump. Accurate sightings using a homemade sighting device (accurate to 24"/mile - details availabe on request) confirmed that the south, firetower hump is indeed the true HP. Future HP'ers need not go to the north hump. And, believe me, you don't want to.
