When NOT to Trust your GPS

Response to August 2009 Accidents/Rescues

Blind faith in electronics can sometimes have a tragic ending, as happened to a child in this situation in Death Valley.

Whatever anybody says, the best computer in the world is the one between your ears. Use it wisely to know when to override what your fancy-schmancy electronics tell you.

(I can't tell you the number of times that I have found "roads" that my GPS maps "knew" that are a) impassable, b) gated or c) no longer exist.)(Same thing about topo maps...trails and roads move or disappear and maps get outdated.)
