Hiked over Clingmans last week. I suggest hiking out of Elkmont, up Little River, Rough Creek, Sugarlands Mt trails and overnight at Mt Collins (11 miles). Second day over the Dome and and down Goshen Prong and overnight at CS 21 or 24 (or all way back to car but it's 16+ miles from Collins).
You could start at Newfound Gap but the road may be closed.
Ice was minimal as snow has been minimal. You may want micro spikes between spring at Collins and a mile or so south of the Dome. There was lots of ice between Collins shelter and the spring.
You could stealth camp at the Dome but there's no water.
I was suprised we saw 5 thru hikers and 3 section hikers last week. Many NOBO's are starting Jan 1st because of almost no snow this year.
March is notorious for big snows.
