APACHE JUNCTION, AZ - A Gilbert man reported missing in the Superstition Mountains since Sunday was found dead early Friday, officials said.

Kenny Clark, 56, was found by a search-and-rescue team and canine unit at about 2 a.m. underneath a tree at least a mile off the Garden Valley Loop trail, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jeff Sprong said. He was found with a water container, but it was unclear whether it was empty or full, officials said.

It appeared Clark was dead for at least a few days, Sprong said.

Officials said there were no obvious injuries on Clark's body, which was flown to another location to be examined my a medical examiner.

MCSO and Pinal County Sheriff's Office deputies were involved in the search, which regularly involved between 20 to 60 people, helicopters and horse-mounted officers, officials said.

Clark drove to the Superstition Mountains for a hike on Sunday morning but did not return that afternoon, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. His family went looking for him and found his car at the First Water Trail head northeast of Apache Junction.
