It's Official: Delaware's High Point is in the Trailer Park

As mentioned in the thread regarding Rhode Island, I am always nervous about us naming state high points other than what is on the official USGS map.

Delware has always been a question mark since the closed contour is in the trailer park rather than at the monument (no doubt there are private property issues here yet to be explored).

I have always been bothered that we have sought excuses for saying that was not the high point (e.g., the argument is that it was the result of grading).

Now the State of Delaware is acknowledging this fact. More to the point they did it 10+ years ago.

Michael Scwhartz (spookymike@aol.com) passes along this letter from the Delaware Repeaters Association at:

The letter is to Bob Averitt (robert.averitt@usa.dupont.com)a director of the Club.

Below is the full text of the letter:

November 26, 1990

Dear Mr. Averitt:

Your letter was forwarded to me by Mr. Sam Merino, New Castle County
Planning. To answer your questions in order:

1) Yes, there is a monument across from the transmission tower on Ebright
road. It is called the EBRIGHT AZIMUTH. It is a National
Geodetic Survey horizontal control Station (latitude/longitude).

2) No, Ebright Azimuth is not the highest point in Delaware. It is the
highest monumented spot in Delaware. In 1985, with the help
of the NGS surveyor, I established an elevation on it. The
elevation of the EBRIGHT AZIMUTH is 447.849 ft above mean sea
level.

3) The true natural highest point in Delaware is about 300 yards west of
the EBRIGHT AZIMUTH in a mobile home park. The elevation in
front of the first trailer in that park is 450.949 ft above
mean sea level.

If you have any question or if I can be of further assistance to you,
please do not hesitate to call me at 451-8262.
